The invention of an all-new wine region

Niepoort, Portugal

For Dirk van der Niepoort, buying vineyards and winemaking estates in the Douro region in 1987 was an important step forward in producing port, and the first step towards making Douro wine. Having a vision pays off: since then, Douro winemakers have become an essential feature of the culinary landscape.  In 2012, Niepoort took over Quinta de Baixo in the Barraido region – challenging soil, but with the potential to become the birthplace of elegant, fine wines bursting with character. Then, with the purchase of Quinta da Lomba and its mature vines in the Dão region in 2013, the winegrowing triangle was complete.

The Niepoort Projetos wines are the result of Dirk’s experimental approach to developing new products. Sometimes only 200 bottles of a single wine are produced, sometimes more. With a view to saving costs, Alessandri Design & Brand Studio created a label design that the winemaker could fill in himself, without having to go back to the designer each time. The design’s basic approach to typography and rough and ready charm underlines that each wine is unique.
